According to the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene, an estimated 2.3 billion people worldwide lacked access to basic sanitation services as of 2019.
This includes services such as access to improved toilets that are not shared with other households, and have a functioning hygienic mechanism for disposing of or treating human waste.
Lack of access to basic sanitation services can have serious health consequences, including the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid, which can be particularly harmful to young children and those with weakened immune systems. It can also contribute to environmental pollution and degradation.
